IELTS Preparation Curriculum
At Merlin English, our IELTS preparation course comprises 20 comprehensive lessons designed to provide students with thorough guidance and preparation for their IELTS speaking exam.
The IELTS speaking exam is designed to assess your ability to communicate effectively in English. The test preparation unit at Merlin English places a strong emphasis on helping you improve your skills for this section of the IELTS exam.
During the speaking exam, you will have a face-to-face conversation with a qualified examiner that typically lasts between 11-14 minutes. The speaking exam consists of three parts:
Part one: Personal interview
In Part one, you will answer questions about your personal life, such as your work/studies, your home/hometown, and where you currently live. The examiner will use this time to get to know you better and assess your ability to communicate in English in a more casual setting.
Part two: 2-minute monologue
In part two, you will be given a card with a question on it. You will have one minute to prepare and then two minutes to speak on the topic. The examiner will then ask one or two follow-up questions about your monologue to further test your ability to communicate effectively.
Part three: Two-way discussion
For the third and final part of the speaking exam, you will engage in a two-way discussion with the examiner that is related to the topic of Part two. You will be expected to give explanations and justify your responses to the examiner's questions. This part of the exam is designed to test your ability to communicate more complex ideas and opinions in English.
